Workshop on Computational Material Science

IIT Goa has started a Lecture Series where expert professors from various fields give seminars and impart their knowledge to the students and faculty.

#1 ENERGY OPTIONS FOR FUTURE

The first Institute Lecture Series was held on 29th January 2018. The speaker was Prof. Sharad Bhartiya from the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay. He gave a talk about the various energy options for the future. He talked about how the world needs to start using environment-friendly energy sources e.g. Wind, Solar, and Algae, and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

#2 MAGIC AND SCIENCE: THE ART OF "ACTIVE" LEARNING AND RESEARCH

The second Institute Lecture Series was held on 12th March 2018. The speaker was Prof. Anil Kumar from the Department of Chemistry, IIT Bombay. He gave a beautiful talk on Magic and Science: The Art of "ACTIVE" Learning and Research. Through various magic tricks, he demonstrated basic concepts of science and inspired everyone to look for the magic in science. It was a very interactive session with the professors as well as the students trying to figure out the various tricks. This aim of this talk was to get students interested in science and research.

#3 WUNDERBAR! A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO STUDYING IN EUROPE and "THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK" IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT

The third Institute Lecture Series was organised by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Goa. It was held on the 3rd and 5th of April 2018. The speaker was Dr Iwona Gusc, a research fellow at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich, Germany. In the first session, she spoke about the problems students could face while studying in Europe. She spoke about the different programmes that would be helpful and also taught the audience common phrases in German, Dutch and Polish. In the second lecture, she showcased her work on "The Diary of Anne Frank". She talked about Anne's history and explained how Anne would write in her diary after being locked in the torture cells. She spoke about Anne's father, whose aim was to publish her diary after her death. This lecture series broadened the minds of the audience and gave them a feel of the power of literature.

#4 WORKSHOP ON COMPUTATIONAL MATERIAL SCIENCE

The fourth Institute Lecture Series was held on 12th April 2018. It was a half-day workshop on Computational Material Science. It aimed at introducing the students to various research aspects other than the core areas which are being offered at IIT Goa at present. The speaker of the introductory seminar was Prof. Amrita Bhattacharya from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science, IIT Bombay. She spoke about computational materials science at an infinitesimal length and time scale. This was then followed by a hands-on session conducted by Prof. Gururajan M from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science, IIT Bombay. He demonstrated the use of Octave to visualize and work on crystalline structures of solids. He displayed how such software was used to study the structures and conduct simulations. After a short break Prof. Ajay Panwar from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science, IIT Bombay conducted another hands-on session. He introduced the basics of the molecular dynamics simulation method. He demonstrated the use of LAMMPS software for molecular dynamics and the use of VMD software for visualizing the simulations.
